Try a tortillon too for the smaller areas, it's a similar effect.

Hi Teresa M, thanks and welcome! I think the milky effect is just my imagination - I work to get the colours more saturated and perhaps looking at it after a break reveals the truth! Thanks for the tip, I'll try the tape!

Wendy, I'd love to be able to sketch more quickly!Felicity Gracehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11145205761346733464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6221007307735821550.post-44683570227329493762008-12-31T01:03:00.000+01:002008-12-31T01:03:00.000+01:00What a lovely quality you have in your portraits a...What a lovely quality you have in your portraits and you obviously are so patient and take care to get it right. Your portrait of your brother is wonderful!
The 'forbidden city faces' is wonderful too. I love how you have captured their expressions.
I was intrigued to read of the milky film you saw on your work. Yes, as Polychromos pencils are oil based it couldn't be wax bloom. I wonder what could be causing this effect?
You mentioned how you erased coloured pencil. Have you tried lifting the pigment? I especially like lifting pigment when I have several layers applied to the paper. I use masking tape (a painter's tape variety as it has less tack) and I also use transparent tape. I would suggest testing this method on your favourite papers. It works great on Stonehenge.
Anyway, congratulations again and best of luck!Teresa Mallenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17978596700598817430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6221007307735821550.post-50001210421401499872008-12-24T15:45:00.000+01:002008-12-24T15:45:00.000+01:00Thank you for your generous offer to answer newbie...Thank you for your generous offer to answer newbie questions. I'm sure you'll hear from me again! LOL! I just ordered and received my first Polychromos pencils (I'd noticed that a lot of folks really liked them) and a half dozen Lyras... and I LOVE 'EM!! And, I tried the tissue and it really worked. I had been struggling with how to smooth out the facial skin - I didn't want the thick smooth look you get when you burnish, but I didn't want to use a solvent either. The tissue is the perfect solution. Many thanks.... and Merry Christmas!Teresahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14186138266137470331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6221007307735821550.post-7881491643811741882008-12-24T13:27:00.000+01:002008-12-24T13:27:00.000+01:00When I see your work its really hard to imagine th...When I see your work its really hard to imagine that you ever doubted your ability ti use color. Thank you so much! Several things you mentioned made the light go on for me..... why you selected particular colors, use of tissue to soften the colors (I wouldn't have thought tissue would budge colored pencil, but I shall certainly try it out... today!) and your approach in general to skintones. This tutorial is worth reading several times over!

Thank you again!Teresahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14186138266137470331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6221007307735821550.post-2392205962834974052008-12-17T18:03:00.000+01:002008-12-17T18:03:00.000+01:00beautiful work!beautiful work!Peahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14480292518654664934noreply@blogger.com
